Men’s Issues
Although men and women bring many similar concerns to psychotherapy, some men also commonly suffer from several issues due to the way they may have been specifically socialized in our culture. This may include a reluctance to view themselves as oppressed or suffering and, therefore, a reluctance to ask for help. They may also suffer from isolation and loneliness; a lack of capacity for joy or pleasure because of an inability to recognize and honor their feelings; and various relationship issues related to culturally dictated “masculine” roles of behavior. Psychotherapy can provide men with a safe and effective forum for exploring and challenging the cultural assumptions, which often perpetuate their suffering.
Other frequent topics of concern for men in therapy include grief and depression, anxiety (especially related to work, relationship issues, self-esteem and sexual issues), relationship and intimacy issues, anger, life transitions, work stress, family and fatherhood roles, sexuality and body-related issues, communication difficulties, addictions, mid-life crises, retirement adjustment, and financial worry and concern.
