Grief
and Loss
The experience of grief
or loss is an inevitable part of human life and often motivates many
people to seek psychological treatment. Numerous types of feelings can
accompany this life transition, including sadness, fear, anger, guilt,
denial, confusion, or numbness. The response to a loss may happen soon
after the event or it can be delayed for a long time. Current losses may
bring up memories from long past experiences. Individual’s may have
varying responses to loss and varying needs at these times, sometimes
requiring space and privacy, other times needing contact and
companionship. This may be upsetting and confusing, both to the
individual suffering the loss and those with whom he or she interacts.
Individual and, often, couple or family counseling can be very helpful
in promoting adjustment to this life circumstance.
Depression is a common component of the grieving process, and sometimes
requires professional intervention, especially if the depression
continues beyond the first several months after the loss, or the
reaction to the loss significantly interferes with the individual’s
daily functioning.
Psychotherapy that evaluates and addresses the issues and feelings
related to grief and loss can be very helpful in overcoming the
accompanying depression, disturbing feelings and behavioral
manifestations. Medication can also be very helpful for symptoms of
depression that interfere with social or occupational functioning, such
as frequent tearfulness, insomnia, inability to concentrate, loss of
appetite, social avoidance, and feelings of hopelessness and
helplessness.
