Family
Issues & Family Therapy
The family is a system
composed of individuals embedded within a social context. The family of
origin includes the mother, father and children; the extended family
includes the grandparents, aunts, uncles and cousins. Step-families and
blended families have their own unique systems.
Families deal with many
different issues which can impact the family system Such issues often
include parenting issues, family of origin issues, blended-families and
step-families issues, conflicting values, conflict between family
members, cultural issues and religious issues.
The
Family Unit
One of the family’s
purposes is to provide support, love, and safety for its members. When
families face problems, challenges and conflicts, they may need help to
avoid or reverse destructive patterns. Cultural issues are an important
part of understanding a family’s system and values.
Problems often are a
result of a combination of an individual's or a family's developmental
arrest plus stress. Difficulties often happen because of problems which
have occurred throughout the generations.
Family
Therapy
In family therapy,
healthy communication is fostered and the connections between events
become clearer. As therapy progresses, the needs and true feelings of
various family members are revealed and understood, and greater empathy
is developed. Conflicting needs are now out in the open where they can
be understood, discussed, and resolved. The family begins to function
better, self-esteem is enhanced, and healthier ways of dealing with
others become a part of the family repertoire.
Providing
Support
Family therapy provides
an opportunity for all family members to come together for mutual
support and re-integration. Too often families splinter because they do
not have this opportunity to devote time to working through family
issues. The therapist can ask questions, support the family and ensure
that everyone is heard. Members working together on their difficulties
often find new ways to participate as a family.
Safety
and Trust
Family therapy addresses
and helps with many challenges faced by families such as divorce,
remarriage, additions or losses in family membership, violence, grief,
illness, addiction, life-style issues, and other stresses that affect
family members. In family therapy, family members can help reduce the
hurt, foster positive interactions, and allow trust to develop.
Hostility, conflict, and misunderstanding can be replaced with positive,
nurturing behaviors. Family members can learn to support and feel safe
with each other and to treat each other with mutual respect and concern.
Family members can adopt new patterns of interaction and find solutions
to family problems and issues.
